Trunk Turkey – Thanksgiving 2016

The plan was Thanksgiving at my house – 2nd time in Pittsburgh, which is a bit of a drive for my family, but i’ve hosted now for many people for many years, ever since the days when my parents still did so. But this year, my daughter and her husband have started a side business …. those of you who have known me throughout my career will laugh – they’ve started a printing business! Due to a last minute order for a ton of t-shirts, they had to change plans 2 days before turkey day and said they must stay home and print. Not willing to leave my mom to a dinner in a retirement community (that would be confusing for her in so many ways… to say the least), I offered to pick her up in Dayton and meet my “kids” for dinner in Columbus at a restaurant on the appointed day. Tuesday eve, with the unusual situation of time on my hands, i just couldn’t fathom the idea of a family holiday at a restaurant … and spontaneously braved the crowds at both Giant Eagle and Whole foods and started cooking. Thursday morning, I loaded pretty much a whole thanksgiving dinner (sans my fabulous roasted butternut squash and garlic bisque) into my trunk and headed for OH. My dear friend Grant (among others) chatted with me on a long day of driving (as i had to pick up my mom in dayton and backtrack to columbus) and laughingly dubbed it “trunk turkey”. It was a great day (including QC duty on the stack of t-shirts) and the tradition of a family being together in one of our homes on thanksgiving has not yet been compromised.
